At the end of last month, the Hawaiian communities neighboring the Maui Island were swept by wildfires, that resulted to destruction of property and loss of lives. The Maui wildfire has impacted to the misplacement of people and claimed the lives of 115 people.
News concerning the Maui fire has attracted numerous humanitarian groups seeking to save lives and restore the dignity of the victims.
Donations for Maui Wildfire Victims
Recently, Oprah Winfrey teamed up with Dwayne Johnson, commonly known as The Rock, to launch a funding project dubbed Peoples’ Fund to support the Maui fire victims. At the initial launching of the funding project, the two celebrities donated $10 million to activate the program.
The People Fund aims at providing direct support to the people affected by the calamity. Addressing the X community, The Rock confirmed that 100% of the funds generated will be transferred to the victims.
He stated that every Hawaiian national residing in the affected areas will receive $1200 monthly. The funds will support the Lahaina and Kula victims to cater for their needs. He stated that the eligible people to receive the funds will include the owners of the properties and the lessees.
Interestingly, the People’s Fund will accept crypto donations in Bitcoin(BTC), Ether (ETH), Dogecoin (DOGE), and other fiat currencies. Meanwhile, wishers have been urged to support Maui victims with financial support.
Maui Victims Proposed Recovery Process
Addressing the media, Winfrey stated a story shared by Dolly Parton on improving the community’s well-being inspired her to support the fire victims. The TV star explained the significance of establishing the People Fund project. The agency’s main goal was to enable the Hawaiians to make informed decisions on resuming normalcy.
In support of this, Johnson confirmed that funds will be transferred to the victims on monthly basis. The 51-year-old movie actor stated that People Fund encourages the affected individual to seek assistance through its online webpage.
Also, wishers worldwide are requested to donate their assets to support recovery from the losses. According to Johnson, after the disbursement of the funds, the Maui residents will decide how they will recover from the trauma and start a new life.
Besides launching the People’s Funds, Ophrah and Johnson are willing to work with other humanitarian bodies to support the Maui victims. As of this publication, not-for-profit organizations including the All Hands and Hearts have teamed up to collect crypto and fiat donations.
A statement from an official at All Hands and Hearts, Olga Ruggiero, illustrated that crypto donation is an effective funding method to support wildfire victims. The executive noted that the crypto sector continues to support the communities in times of need.
However the community expressed mixed reactions after Winfrey shared a video on Instagram requesting people to support the Maui victims. Some of the followers of the Hollywood stars requested the two to donate their savings towards the project.
